Open Door to Learning

Distance Learning has a definition that is complex. Here, it means that you have numerous INTERACTIVE tools for gaining skills, concepts, & ideas. These tools are selected specifically to meet a goal (learning objective) set by the instructor or facilitator. We call them ‘learning technologies’!

It also means that you take action: experiential learning is the best way to describe it. Nothing "quick & dirty."

Think about the relationship between LITERACY & workplace SAFETY... both the skills required to take in and use information, & the information itself, are necessary for today’s businesses. We focus on them both.

Distance Learning has two formats:
  • courses
  • communities (CoIs or SIGs) for collaborative projects

Courses have learning activities & requirements for completion. CoIs are 'virtual coffee houses' replete with 'electronic filing cabinets' & other tools for in-depth idea exchange. Think of being on a team working on a project and using a CoI to organize & engage. Or think of a SIG - special interest group - that you may have encountered within your professional organization. The akDLN takes this idea & adds newer apps for your interaction.

The akDLN is “Software-as-a-Service”: costly investment in hardware & software is not required by subscribers

Using collaboration tools, the akDLN offers workplace sharing of
  • • Ideas: Suggest, discuss and vote on ideas • Questions: Ask questions & share expertise
  • • Groups: Create groups on initiatives, topics or projects
  • • Recognition: Reward contributions in an open environment
  • • Knowledge management: Highlight learning outcomes & discussions
